Description: The CMM & Metrology Manager owns dimensional inspection and measurement systems, with a primary focus on our ZEISS CONTURA CMM and ZEISS CALYPSO programming environment. This role leads metrology deliverables for APQP/PPAP, including dimensional layouts, MSA/Gage R&R, capability studies, calibration systems, and daily production support. The ideal candidate can work independently, build robust inspection routines, train a small team, and deliver consistent, audit-ready measurement performance in an IATF 16949 environment.
Key Responsibilities:
1) Metrology Department Leadership
* Lead all dimensional inspection activities for incoming, in-process, and final inspection.
* Supervise, train, and mentor inspectors/metrology technicians; establish standardized work and training plans.
* Prioritize daily inspection demand
* Drive discipline around data integrity, repeatability, traceability, and documentation.
2) ZEISS CONTURA CMM Programming & Operation (CALYPSO)
* Create, optimize, and maintain ZEISS CALYPSO programs for gears, shafts, and precision machined components
* Apply best practices for probing strategy, alignments, fixturing, temperature considerations, and uncertainty control.
* Troubleshoot program issues, out-of-tolerance results, and measurement variation
*Support CMM utilization planning
*Preferred – CALYPSO PCM (parametric programming), offline programming concepts, and reporting/data workflows
3) Gear & Precision Feature Measurement Support
* Lead measurement planning and execution for gear and rotational features,
4) Automotive Quality Systems (IATF 16949 / APQP /PPAP/ MSA)
* Own metrology deliverables for APQP/PPAP
5) First Article, Launch, and Production Support
* Lead FAI/first-article inspections, process validations, and launch readiness metrology support.
* Provide rapid response to dimensional issues: containment, measurement confirmation, root cause support, and verification of corrective actions.
* Work closely with Production and Engineering to improve process capability using data-driven analysis
6) Calibration, Gauge Control, and Equipment Management
* Maintain calibration and gauge control systems for metrology tools (CMM, masters, gages, indicators, micrometers, height gages, etc.)
Qualifications:
* 3-7 years in metrology, dimensional inspection, and/or CMM programming in precision machining (Tier-1/Tier-2 automotive preferred.
* Strong Hands-on CMM Programming.
* Strong understanding of GD&T, datum structures, blueprint reading, and tight-tolerance manufacturing
* Working knowledge of APQP, PPAP, MSA (Gage R&R), SPC, and IATF 16949 measurement requirements
* Proven ability to lead or serve as primary owner of a metrology/inspection function (team leadership a plus)
* Strong documentation and communication skills; able to clearly present results to Quality, Engineering, and customers.
